Ugly: Speed matters in SEO, and Wix is lagging behind

When it comes to speed, it’s worth noting that it is an SEO ranking factor and has been for a while. Not only does your website have to be fast on desktop but most importantly mobile.

Core Web Vitals will be a ranking factor. So, it’s best that you ensure that your website is fast.

According to tests done by Seobility, Wix’s loading time is SLOW. Why is it so?

Mostly due to a lot of render-blocking Javascript.

In Short:

Speed matters a lot. In a recent study, for every 100-millisecond delay in page loading time, there was a 1% drop in engagement. Wix is behind its competitors when it comes to speed. However, we will wait to see improvements.

Wix’s Page Builder Generates A lot of Code

Also, according to the tests done by Seobility, the page builder generates a lot of code and it will affect speed. The more code on your site, the slower it loads. Wix is lagging behind in this regard, as their builder generates a ton of extra code.

Wix’s competitors do not require you to enter your entire website into the builder before generating the HTML. Rather, they allow you to generate as you go and avoid entering unnecessary information (like page header details). If someone wants to design more advanced elements like custom buttons or custom modules then they can still do that.

Although Wix’s builder is easy to use and their templates look great, it’s clear that Wix is still lagging behind in this department.

Should You Be Worried About the Code?

Yes. Because it will affect speed.

You should care about speed because Google does. In fact, there is a good chance that your website being slow is the reason you’re not ranked well in Google search results for your target keywords.

Too many webmasters and website owners have been thinking that this is one more ranking factor they can ignore, but the truth is they are wrong.

It is very important to improve your site’s speed so you get a better user experience and a boost in your SEO rankings.

A slower website can be a turn-off for potential clients.

Wix SEO Features Checklist

The Step-by-Step Guide for Beginners

Wix is probably the most popular website builder among WordPress users. Wix allows its users to build professional websites without any knowledge of coding. However, it’s hard to find a comprehensive step-by-step guide on how to use Wix for beginners. There are plenty of guides out there.

Are you ready to get started with Wix? Or, are you looking for a detailed and complete guide on how to use Wix for beginners? Are you stuck with some glitch and not able to go forward with your Wix website?

If any of these is yes, then this article is definitely what you need.

Step 1: Setup Your Wix By Signing Up

To set up your free Wix website, go to the website and do it. You can sign up for one here. If you wish to use a free website, you can select the wix domain. Alternatively, if you decide to choose a paid plan, you won’t have to pay before the website is complete.

Then, you will have to answer some straightforward questions about your website.

Step 2: Select Wix ADI or Editor

This step will be perhaps the biggest choice you’ll have to make about the website. Do you have to use Wix templates or the Wix ADI (website created for you but you can tweak it).

Wix will recommend these options but it will be dependent on how you answered the questions asked in step 1.

It’s worth noting that you could move from the Wix ADI to the standard Wix editor but not vice versa. To access the ADI, you will need to login to your account, go to my site, add new site and follow the instructions

ADI is great if:

  1. You need a website to be set up fast.

  2. Website is small with less than 10 pages.

  3. You don’t want to control what happens to your web design.

If you choose the Wix Editor, you will get access to more choices when it comes to design customization and a wide range of widgets. So, it can be great for you if your needs are for an advanced website.

It all depends on your needs. Most advanced users will pick Wix editor. In this article, we will select the Wix editor.

Step 3: Pick Your Favorite Template

You will love this step. Depending on the selected category, Wix will recommend some templates – all you need to do is pick your favorite.

Wix has several beautiful templates that you can select from, so, you will find it easy to choose what you like. Always remember the Editor will allow you to make changes so don’t fret if you don’t find the one you need. Make sure the one you select is similar to your favorite one.

To check previews, move the cursor over the template and press ‘View’. Then check the full demo.

You’ve found the ideal template for your Wix site. Simply press the ‘Edit’ button.

Step 4: Understand the Editor

You’ll get access to the Wix Editor where you can make the required changes to the website. For advanced users, there is a chance that you’ll get a popup letting you know about the Wix’s Velo platform.

Then, you will want to ensure that the Dev Mode is switched off so you don’t deal with several unnecessary windows. (note: you’ll only require them when you need to make code changes). Move the cursor to the ‘Dev Mode’ in the site’s menu and click where it says, ‘Turn off Dev Mode’.

Can’t see the toolbar? Don’t fret – you can click the ‘Tools’ that you will see on the top right, and it’s essential everything is done right:

After doing this, you can start editing the website.

Step 5: Ensure You Edit the “Hero Section” of the Homepage

When you’re on the Wix editor, you will see photos, text and the background. Everything on it is editable. All you’re required to do is click on an element and you start editing. So, you can begin by clicking on the primary heading.

You can type in the desired text. After doing this, you will see a new window popping up called ‘Text Settings’. Here, you can make changes to the font, and even add the desired effects.

So, you can test features and always remember you can revert the changes by pressing the back arrow which you can access in the menu.

Helpful Tip: Ensure you avoid using various fonts on the website. Always utilize the usual format H1, H2, H3, and more to avoid dealing with inconsistencies.

Also, it’s worth noting that you can edit text under the primary heading the same way. You can delete text elements. Just click the text and press the ‘delete’ button on the keyboard.

Now that you have your homepage, everything will look good!

Let’s say you want to change your background. This will be easy. You need to click on the image. A button will appear with the words ‘Change Page Background’. Click it and you’ll see options to change the background images with solid color, video or a new photo.

If you select ‘Image’, you could choose your photo or pick an image that are available.

After picking the desired image, you will love how the homepage will look like.

Looking great! Isn’t it. Read on to see how to make changes to the homepage .

Step 6: Add, Edit and Delete Sections on the Homepage

On your homepage, scroll down and you might find out that you should keep some sections in the template, change or delete others. It’s okay.

Let’s begin with the simple step first – delete sections. In the toolbar, you will have to click ‘Zoom Out and Reorder’.

The process will allow you to see your website in a zoomed out view. Click the strip you want to remove and click the undo button.

If you wish to reorder the sections on the page, you can click the arrow icons which will allow you to move them up or down.

Adding new sections

What if you wish to add new sections? Well, here’s where you need to use the left toolbar.

First, you will need to exit by pressing the ‘Exit mode’ button and you will be back to the Editor space.

Now that you’re on the left toolbar, click the Add (+) button. After clicking the ‘+’ button, you will access a lot of options of the various elements that you could add to the page. This includes images, text, gallery, buttons and more.

For instance, you might want to change the ‘Strip’ you have on the homepage. The strip will act as a block for content. You could either choose an ‘About Us’, ‘Classic’ or ‘Testimonials’ strip. Then, you need to click and drag the strip to where you want it on the page.

You can select the ‘Classic’ strip and change the background color so that it suits the website’s theme. This step is similar to what we did in Step 5. Choose the strip and press the ‘Change Strip Background’ and click ‘Color’.

Step 7: Add a Photo Gallery

If you wish to add a photo gallery on the page, it’s essential to know that it can be done well. Also, move to the left toolbar, click the add (+) button and pick ‘Gallery’. Here, you will have numerous gallery options to select from:

You can pick your favorite and move it to the position that you want on the page. (remember if you have to create more space for the gallery, you can move the strips).

If the template has a photo gallery, you will have to click on it to choose it. A few choices will pop up. Some include ‘Arrow’ ‘Settings’ and ‘Manage Media’.

Picking ‘Settings’ will allow you to make adjustments to the layout of the gallery shown. If you wish to have another layout, don’t hesitate and choose it.

You could add new photos by pressing ‘Manage Media’. Remove the current photos and press ‘Add Media’ to add personal photos or select some from the Wix’s collection.

In the same window, it’s worth noting that you can edit the title and description of the photos. Remember they won’t be seen on the website but it’s vital for SEO. If you want, you could add links.

Step 8: Add the Contact Form

Having a contact form on your website is essential. While you could add the form on a different page, here is what you should know when adding one on the homepage. Again, go to the left toolbar, press the (+) button. Choose ‘Contact & Forms’, and pick your favorite type of form. Don’t fret, styles can be changed.

Step 9: Ensure the Webpage is Clean

Once we’re on this step, we’re almost ready to publish the Wix website

In the template, you might have seen a couple of things that you don’t want on the website. They include chat widget, floating logo, social media icons and more.

To remove these, you will delete them like other elements. Just, select the element and click ‘Delete’ on the keyboard.

Step 10: Your Website Should be Mobile-Friendly

We’ve been talking about how to set up a website that’s desktop friendly. But it’s 2021. A lot of traffic we’ll be coming from mobile. So, it’s crucial to ensure your website is mobile-friendly.

However, Wix’s sites aren’t mobile-friendly by default. You will have to make a couple of changes to make sure it is ready.

In the menu, you’ll see a mobile icon. Click it so that you can view the mobile version.

The mobile version of the website looks great however Wix could still improve it.

You can fix anything that isn’t appealing including text placement. Also, you could hide or remove unnecessary components and even rearrange sections.

The changes that you will make will not affect the desktop version – so you will get the chance to optimize the website however you want.

Step 11: Update the Company Details and Ensure it is SEO-Optimized

This step is optional but it is recommended if you wish to get found on the SERPs.

The menu (one that allows you access to the backend of the website) is going to be used to update the website’s business information. This is vital if you wish to get it optimized and seen on Google.

Click ‘Settings’ and select ‘Business Info’.

You will go to a dashboard where you can enter contact information, address, and the website’s regional settings. Ensure you click save once you’re complete with the process.

After that, you will need to handle the SEO settings. Click ‘Settings’ in the top bar and select ‘Get Found on Google’.

You will access the Wix’s SEO wizard which will make the process of optimization straightforward. Follow each step, enter the business name, and business description.

You will see the customized SEO plan. It is recommended that you follow each step to ensure you optimize the numerous elements of the website (Homepage title, Google connection, SEO description and more).

Step 12: Look Through and Publish the Website

Congrats – you’re at the final step! Before the site is published, you need to ensure everything is great. Click ‘Preview’ and see if you’re satisfied with both the mobile and desktop versions.

Once everything is okay, click ‘Back to Editor’ and click ‘Publish’.

Your website is live! Hurray!

Once you’re satisfied that everything looks okay, click the green ‘Back to Editor’ button at the top right of the screen. Now, let’s go ahead and hit that blue ‘Publish’ button, again at the top right of the screen.

And that’s it – your Wix site is now live! 🙌 🎉

Wix SEO & Other Considerations When Comparing Wix vs WordPress

When you decide to create a website, the first question that will come to your mind will be, ‘what platform do I use?’

For most people who are nervous about building a website but don’t have the skills to do so, Wix will be the ideal choice.

Hiring an expert to help you design your WordPress website will mean it’s imperative to have a budget for web design. And that can be challenging if you’re a business owner with a tight budget. Nevertheless, if you’re unaware of how the WordPress dashboard works, the process of updating it can be tricky.

Thus, since Wix is free with top affordable features that will let you use a customized domain without needing to work with an expert, what are other considerations when making comparisons between WordPress and Wix?

You will learn about the biggest difference between WordPress SEO and Wix SEO.

Both Platforms Will Need Your Input When it Comes to SEO

It doesn’t matter which platform you will select to create your website — whether it’s WordPress or Wix. It’s imperative to know that you will need to work extra hard if you wish to rank for relevant keywords on the SERPs.

The best one can’t show you which keywords to use to reach the intended audience.

It can’t give you tips on how to constantly update your articles in order to remain on top. Also, it can’t suggest topics to write about.

It’s worth noting that only you can do whatever it takes to improve your website’s rankings on Google. That said, the right technical structure can keep you on course to achieving your online goals while a bad one can put you further behind in the race.

Wix SEO: Fixing Errors

Before 2016, Wix SEO wasn’t considered a major player.

According to tests done by WebsiteToolTester, the URL had random characters, one couldn’t add meta information to the posts, and you couldn’t use the ‘add ALT tags’ feature. All in all, the chance to do On-page SEO wasn’t possible.

Wix was being managed on Flash.

However, most of the WIX SEO errors have been resolved. To ensure SEO was being done correctly, Wix said they were working with Moz.

From the look of things, it appears the partnership was helpful as Wix always mentions Moz when discussing anything about keyword research.

So, if Moz is backing Wix SEO, should you?

Some people may opt not because they think it’s business but it’s essential to try it and make your final choice.

Wix SEO: Will it Help You Rank?

The answer is Yes!

Today, Wix has solved most of the website builder’s previous ranking problems. If you’re experienced in SEO, you will not encounter issues when you want to rank a website.

So, if Wix is targeting people looking to have personal websites or small business owners who have no experience in SEO, then Wix SEO alone will not be helpful for someone who’s looking to rank without prior knowledge.

If you lack experience creating websites or doing On-page SEO, creating a website on Wix may not be helpful.

How is it?

Inexperienced Designers Could Create a Website with a Bad User-Experience

It goes without saying that today, Wix has templates that are great to how they were before.

If you know what to do- communicating with your online audience to get them to work with you will be easy if you choose a beautiful template. The right template will allow you to achieve your online objectives.

But for an individual who lacks the skill and experience, several choices can end up in having a website that isn’t appealing. However, if the final outcome is ‘great’ it will not help you if you don’t convert the online visitors to regular clients. The design might be nice but if the user-experience is terrible then you will not achieve what you want.

You need to hire a reputable web designer. If you wish to be successful in business, you need to treat your website seriously.

Wix SEO: What to Expect

In the in-built SEO, Wix has the following:

  1. Mobile-friendly Optimization

  2. ALT Photo tags

  3. Customizable URLs

  4. Page meta tags

With “technical SEO,” here is what to expect:

  1. 301 redirects

  2. Sitemaps

  3. Noindex tags

  4. Schema.org implementation

Wix SEO: Code Problems (2021)

There have been significant problems with Wix SEO but the common one that you will hear SEO experts talk about is the code overload.

We conducted a test on a website available on their page

Here is what we found:

It’s simple and minimal. Navigation is great and focus is on the service. The site owner is a nutritionist.

However, after right-clicking to check the site’s code, there’s an unnecessary code which makes the site slow. When we put www.mikaelareuben.com on the Google Pagespeed Insights page, here is what we discovered:

The time to interact with the website is 27.7 seconds on mobile.

Very slow!

Wix needs to solve the code bloat thing ASAP!

Wix SEO: Problems Wix Needs to Solve in 2022

Even though Wix SEO has improved, it’s worth noting that there are numerous problems that you will encounter when you use it.

Here are some:

  1. Edit the page design for mobile but not possible for tablets.

  2. When it comes to subheadings, you will huse H1s to H2s on blog posts and H1s to H6s on pages. If you’re looking to rank high on the SERPs, it should be vice versa.

  3. Inadequate photo optimization choices. The solution is to adjust the image resolution without lowering the image quality. If you have several photos that aren’t compressed, they could make the website slow

  4. Lack of hreflang support for bilingual sites.

Also, Wix SEO needs to continue improving the current SEO features so that websites can rank well on the SERPs.

Wix vs. WordPress: What You Don’t Get on Wix

Let’s talk about on-page SEO. Wix offers support when it comes to onpage SEO.

Similar to Yoast SEO, Wix SEO claims they are specialists in onpage SEO.

But when you test it, you won’t see the insights. Wix SEO has the URL slug, meta title, description. All in all, the basics.

Yoast SEO has the basics and offers insights with a complete section about readability.

Another significant distinction when making comparisons between Wix and WordPress is the customization that you will get on WordPress.

Wix has applications while WordPress uses plugins. With Wix, their app market is still fairly new. WordPress has plugins that will not need to be approved to function with the primary software.

When you use Wix, you will know that they offer support for some SEO tools that are not common. When you check out the app marketplace, some tools are not available.

On the contrary, WordPress provides a wide range of SEO plugins. These plugins are updated regularly with reviews. If unsure, some plugins have hundreds of reviews.

Here are some popular WordPress plugins that you can use to improve your SEO:

  1. Shortpixel – Used to compress bulk images.

  2. Yoast SEO – Handles onpage SEO with ease.

  3. WP Rocket – Required to improve the webpage loading time

Ready To Boost Your Wix Site?

Are you thinking of boosting your Wix site? If so, you have already taken a step in the right direction. However, it is wise for you to take a few additional steps before undertaking the task of increasing your Wix site’s search engine rankings. You will want to make sure that you are ready for this challenge before diving head first into the task.

Keyword Research

What are keywords? Keywords are words or phrases that people use to search for products and services on the Internet.

What is keyword research? Keyword research is a process of analysis and brainstorming to find the right keywords. Keyword research is the heart of all SEO. For Google to find you, you need to find the keywords that describe what you’re offering to your potential customers.

When your keyword research is really good, it becomes obvious how to structure your site so Google can easily crawl it and show it in search results.

It’s not hard to do keyword research, but it’s very easy to do something wrong.

In order to do keyword research, you have to first brainstorm a list of keywords that your target audience would use when looking for the products or services that you offer. You can find these potential keyword ideas by doing some online research and by trying out different keywords on search engines like Google and Bing.

The common practice of using short-tail keyword phrases for SEO is a big mistake. People use short-tail keyword phrases for SEO because they are keywords with a high search volume. But the long-tail keywords have a significant search volume, which means you can get more traffic from Google if you rank for them and have lower competition.

Mobile Optimization

Every website owner wants to make his or her website rank at the top of Google search results for relevant keywords. More often than not, the keyword is the name of their company or product. But placing your website at the top of Google’s search results doesn’t come without its challenges.

If you don’t know how to optimize your site, then you will be lagging behind your competitors – and that’s a losing strategy.

The first thing that you need to do is make sure that your site is mobile-friendly. Google shows preference to those sites that are mobile-friendly because most people now use their smartphones to access the internet. If you don’t want to lose out on those valuable visitors, then your site should be as easy as possible for them to access even through their phone’s smaller screen.

How do I ensure that my site is mobile-friendly?

The first thing that you need to do is check if your web host has a “responsive design” option. This will allow you to create a site with a layout and elements that can adapt according to the device used by people viewing it.

Off-Page Optimization

In order to improve your site’s rank, you should pay more attention to the Off-Page SEO Optimization. It is a very important part in the process of Search Engine Optimization because it allows you to get more backlinks and take advantage of social media.

The basic idea behind off-page optimization is that not all backlinks are created equally. Some websites have a much higher PageRank than others, and some websites have a much higher authority as well as PageRank. You can find a lot of useful information about Off-Page SEO Optimization on this website, so keep reading.

In order to rank high on Google Fast , it is necessary for you to have many different backlinks from many different domains. The better the authority of a website, the better your chances of ranking high on Google Fast .

You can also increase your authority by getting more social media followers.

It’s important to know that Wix will allow you to share your website on social media.

Social media is the best way to increase traffic and ultimately sales for any online business. If you have a large number of followers on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and other social media sites, then people will naturally link to you more often. This will help you to gain more authoritative links from high-quality domains that will help you with your ranking.”

You will also get to share the image on your preferred social media site. Make changes easily in the editor.

Titles/Meta Improvements

When it comes to titles, Google is somewhat unique. In addition to looking at the words in your title tag, Google will also look at the words in your page’s content. So if you have a meta description tag with a certain keyword in it, Google will look for that same word on the page.

In fact, Google will often read the first few lines of text on a page, and if a keyword they’re looking for is there, they’ll sometimes just use that as the title tag!

So if you have a chance to write your own titles and descriptions, make sure you include those important keywords!

But what happens if someone else gets to write your page titles and descriptions? In that case, you want to make sure those keywords are really prominent on your pages.

The most obvious way to do this is good old-fashioned repetition: put those keywords as close as possible to where they’ll be read by both people and search engines.

Content Review

As Google is the dominant search engine, it is important to know how to optimize your website for it. Writing high quality content is one of the best ways to do that.

The key to writing good content is to make your site user friendly. Search engines like sites that are easy for users to navigate and find what they are looking for. By having good content on your site, you are making it easier for users to navigate and find what they are looking for.

Good content also helps search engines determine which sites are high quality and which ones should be ranked higher than others. This is because the more information a search engine has to go on about a particular site, the more accurate its ranking of the site will be.

Search engines use spiders or robots that crawl through sites, gathering information about them so they can be ranked accordingly by search engines. Content plays an important role in helping these robots determine what your site is about and if it should be ranked highly or not.

Take advantage of the Wix blog.

A blog is great because you can add fresh content any time, and thus rank higher in search engine results.

It’s not just about good content. It’s also about sharing it on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter.

So when people click on your link, they’ll see something that’s relevant and up-to-date.

Google has said that in the future, quality will count more than quantity in determining a site’s ranking in search results.

This means that if you can show Google that you have a website that features original and interesting content, you’re likely to rank highly for your target keywords.

Site Architecture

Site structure is an important part of site optimization. It helps to have a fantastic website as it helps to keep your site running smoothly and helps you to rank high on search engines.

The importance of having a great website is because it not only affects the speed of your website, but it also affects your rankings on search engines. The site should be well structured so that the search engine spiders can crawl them properly and index them in a way that will improve your rankings.

It’s a good idea to use a sitemap as a guide to help you structure the pages of your website. A sitemap is basically an index of all the pages within your site or blog and this can be used by search engines such as Google, Yahoo and Bing for finding and crawling the pages easily.
